Uptonogood Bike Challenge

After last years hugely successful and well organised event I was really looking forward to the second uptonogood bike challenge ever, unfortunately was feeling a tad rough from what I think may have been a stomach bug, cramps and dare I say it poops lot’s and lot’s of poops.

Turned up on the morning to a bustling field in Upton Oxfordshire full of all sorts of activities and stalls and headed in to register for the 25 mile leisure ride around the bridleways and single tracks of the Ridgeway.

The weather was a bit iffy to say the least with showers and glorious sunshine all mixed together switching between the two ever few minutes so it was jacket on, jacket off, jacket on etc. decided on the jacket on for the first part of the course just in case but this proved to be far to hot, so jacket off .

Set off in a large group following the mountain mania van over the A417 and onto the real start of the off road sections and on toward the infamous Ginge brook drop that proved to be a bloody, muddy nightmare, if you were brave you could ride it but I didn’t see anyone brave enough as the mud was horrendous.

The rest of the ride followed last years course and was a wash in mud and slop making it a real challenge for the Rocket Ron tyres that I was running front and back, they proved to be hopeless tyres in the wet even running with very little air in them they were all over the place and it was a miracle they didn’t fling me off at every turn.

Further and further into the ride I started to feel better so decided to try and better last years time that had been pretty slow due to multiple punctures and a lack of fitness. Much of the ride went well apart from braining myself on a low tree branch as I climbed a single track up to the Ridgeway, Getting into a bit of a habit this, I’m onto my third helmet in a year, luckily only my pride was hurt as I catapulted off the back of the bike,  luckily no one saw my little excursion to the ground.

Completed the course in a respectable 02:47 which was the overall time and I beat last years time by 10 minutes, given the ground conditions I’m pretty pleased with myself.

Oxfordshire Classic Charity Ride 60 Miles

Open-mouthed smile Well yesterday was a great event run in aid of the charity against breast cancer , run by bike events who from what I can see provided the signs for a £15 entrance fee but there you go I suppose someone has to organise it.

Started off from Harwell with my buddies Matt and Rafe who I was meeting for the first time, setting off in a circular route around Oxfordshire in great weather considering it had battered down the previous two nights.

Lots of free standing water for the first part of the course and in parts it was a case of freewheeling through the waterlogged roads but it eventually gave way to drier conditions.

Personally I didn’t like the first 30 miles as it followed a lot of “A” class roads that where pretty busy especially some of the town centres i.e. Wallingford. It was at this point I had my first experience of a busted spoke, I actually thought it was a stone smacking the side of the bike but as I pedalled it was obvious something more serious was amiss as the wheel was wobbling all over the place. Anyway with a short stop and inspection I decided it was ok to ride on having released the rear break to stop the binding and it did last the whole ride without any problems.

Was a bit disappointed with the so called refreshment stops as they were just pub stops with the first one being closed so I was unable to top up my bottle, the trailbreaks rides I’ve done provided water stations with free energy drink top ups so come on bike events sort it out £15 ?.

Shortly after this I encountered my first puncture on my Giant since taking ownership over a year ago, rapidly fixed by Rafe and myself we headed on toward Haney and our pre arranged cake stop at Mattys mother-in-law’s, thanks very much for the toilet as I was bursting big time by this point.

The next 30 miles proved to be far more scenic and enjoyable, the west of the county is far less busy and nicer to ride around.

Uffington and the white horse proved to be the crux of the ride with a 12% gradient hill thrown in followed by a less severe but by no means easier hill shortly after, the mtb riding has given me strong legs on the hills now so they proved no problem at all.

Crossed the finish with a respectable just over 4 hours ride time so was more than chuffed with that, and all for a good cause, hopefully they managed to raise a fair amount considering there was about 1300 riders.

March Cycling Madness

Had a great month in March plenty of miles added to the #March100 218 miles to be precise, well in for the month so really happy with myself, it seems that the weather is starting to improve and I can now bang some half decent mileage in.

Taken delivery of my new Cube AMS 110 Pro from chainreaction cycles and have to say it’s like stepping up from a BMW to a Bugati Vayron, the difference in weight, handling, quality, superb quick shifting is unbelievably good, It’s taken my riding skills off road up another notch I would say.

The bike was £1700 and for the price you get a lot of nice quality kit and good old chainreaction threw a load of freebies in for my as well, muti tools, pedal spanner, energy gels pack, water bottle, I was pretty impressed.

Ride and handling are superb with quick light cornering and superb stopping power thanks’ to the 180mm discs front and back, I was a bit apprehensive about a full suss bike but it has proved that good design can eliminate all that energy sapping suspension older bikes have, climbing uphill it has very little bounce and therefore most if not all of the power goes to the back wheel, there is the added bonus of being able to lock the front and back suspension out pretty quickly so making a nice completely stiff Mtb but it’s really not necessary. To say I’m impressed is an understatement and with the fine German engineering and quality it a whole lot of bike for your buck.

I hope to start adding more routes to the route tab shortly, they will include GPX files for download to any GPS device, all will be legal bridleways and byways to include a brief description of the terrain and route.

Spring is upon us

Lot’s of great riding this month easily completing the #March100 and looking forward to some more challenges using dailymile a great site for keeping motivated and logging routes, times, and making new buddies.

Used the plantronics 903+ headset to good effect this month seems to work well enough although a few niggles when placed behind you in a pocket so I’ve overcome this by wearing a bum bag around at the front of me, job done. Great sound and easy to use with solid battery life.

Lot’s of routes to add at the end of the month so a summary is probably better on the lesser training routes and hopefully a bit of description on the longer rides.

Using the Muvi camera on every ride now, just recording everything maybe if something interesting ever happens I will post it, so beware all you bad drivers your being filmed, evidence!!

March Cycling Miles

A few routes to add to the #march100, weather starting to improve a bit which is about time, had enough of the cold now thanks.

Started using my Muvi camera helmet mounted on all my routes now so will post the odd video that looks slightly interesting, I know, there’s nothing more boring than a fat bloke out of breath trying to get up a hill so will post crashes and arseholes who try and cut me up.

Also taken delivery of a plantronics bluetooth headset that links to my iphone, so far very useful , great sound and easy to operate with plenty of battery life, fully charged about 7 hours. One of my major bug bears was the iphone headphones constantly popping out of my ears every time I glanced over my shoulder.

Bonus is you can control your iphone and make and receive calls which is handy.

Mud & Slop

A few rides to add for the month of Feb to bring me up to the 105 miles toward the #Feb100 challenge.

18th Feb: ride was a pure nightmare as I was full of a virus or just sheer tiredness, felt very poor and had to turn back after 5 miles so have written that one off.

23rd Feb: was a ride that was only 10 miles but with all the wheel spinning was probably about 15 miles, unbelievably sloppy tracks pretty much un rideable with me pushing the bike for most of it.

24th Feb: Great ride on the road bike and real nice not to be covered in crap, nice and hilly but cold as hell as usual, getting a bit sick of winter now.

Having just purchased my Veho Muvi camera I have used it on a couple of routes so far and picture quality for such a tiny gadget is spot on, managed to find some freeware video editing software off snapfiles and can now chop and crop parts of the video as a two hour video of me on a bike would send any bugger to sleep.

Bonus is, I can now record my whole ride so any arseholes who try and cut me up will be filmed for posterity

Just taken delivery of my new helmet cam (Amazon) and I can’t wait to give it a whirl tomoz, just filming about the house I’ve been very impressed so far.

Motivation back

Open-mouthed smileWell finally managed to get out on a ride, great little 14 miler at night around the local bridleways with Damo from the Fire station.

Tracks were great, nice and frozen no mud yeahhhh!!! very cold though down into the minuses again but I was wrapped up well, can’t wait for the thermal insoles from exo2 to arrive as my feet were frozzed as usual.

And whooop my bike light lasted the distance after ordering a new charger from the states, the original one that came with the light was obviously a dud. The new charger made the light last 3 hours so happy days.

Started the #Dec100 finally now I can bang some miles on it.

Started: 9 Dec 2010 18:33:16
Ride Time: 1:09:52
Stopped Time: 12:05
Distance: 13.74 miles
Average: 11.80 miles/h

Motivation lag

Not been out for a couple of weeks and I’m getting a bit lazy and complacent with it all, maybe it’s the cold weather or the fact we are so busy at work now with full generation at the power station, couple that with short days and equipment going tits up I need to get my motivation back.

Waiting on my thermal insoles to appear that I sent back last week and my 900 lumen light from bestofferbuy decided to pack up again, they have given me a partial refund of 40% which was pretty decent of them. On the plus side I tried a mates charger on it and charged the arse off it for about 8 hours, BINGO! got over 3 hours out of it so I’ve ordered a new charger from the states, cant wait.

Christmas looming and a week off so hope to be out this week on either the roadie or the mtb.

Got a nice photo of the power station I would like to share with you though, as I took it.

The Big Freeze

Well it’s been a bit of a shocker with all this weather, the bikes taken a back seat for a few days and the car seems a lot more appealing, gotta love those heated seats.

Sent loads of gear back lately mostly overshoes, I seem to be in a constant battle with sizing and quality it’s all either too small or falling to bits. Endura MT500 overshoes avoid like the plague, absolute shoddy quality.

Having said that my new thermal insoles from EXO 2 started out great but I think may have a problem, another item sent back but in all fairness I have had possibly the best customer service of any item I have bought this far, well done to them they couldn’t help me enough and I’m looking forward to my replacement,  this product out of everything I’ve bought so far is by far the most useful.

Everyone be careful out there over the coming weeks, icy roads and rubber tyres don’t mix so well, we all want to see next year don’t we?
